Volvemos a las andadas con una
entrevista a un grupo gallego del que hablamos a primeros de Septiembre, el
dueto Dioivo, que amablemente nos ha respondido a una batería de preguntas
sobre su disco y su universo. No he cambiado nada, como de costumbre, incluso
la metedura de pata que cometí en una de las preguntas.
Como siempre, un placer hablar con
músicos que tienen las cosas claras y agradecerles la pronta respuesta. Por
nuestra parte desearles lo mejor de aquí en adelante y dejarles las puertas del
blog abiertas para lo que necesiten…

*Si queréis, podéis presentaros para
gente que, como yo, no os conozca demasiado hasta ahora…
Hola! Somos Dioivo, un dúo de black
metal melódico procedente de Vigo, Galicia.
*Algunos trabajos en unos cuantos
años, desde 2016, y ahora, por fin, un disco largo. ¿Qué os ha impulsado a dar
ese salto?
Siempre tuvimos en mente la idea de
grabar discos largos. De hecho, nuestro primer EP, que lanzamos unos meses
después de formar el grupo, dura algo más de media hora. Cuando tocó grabar su
continuación, ya teníamos unos ahorrillos acumulados, así que pudimos hacer un
álbum propiamente dicho.
*Contadnos sensaciones de grabar este
disco y explicadnos un poco el desarrollo del trabajo desde el punto de partida
hasta su publicación.
Fue muy gratificante, ya que
llevábamos bastante tiempo trabajando en los ocho temas que conforman el disco.
Una vez los tuvimos todos listos, fuimos a los Unreal Studios, en Marín, a
grabar con Zoilo (Unreal Overflows, The Anthagonist...), y después de unos
pocos meses el disco ya estaba listo. Quedamos muy contentos con su forma de
trabajar y el resultado final. No hay mucho más que contar porque, la verdad,
todo fue prácticamente sobre ruedas.
*Los temas recogen una gran variedad
de distintos estilos como pueden ser el death, el black o el thrash. ¿Buscáis
esa amalgama como punto de partida para crear o es algo a lo que, dependiendo
del tema, se llega por propio desarrollo del corte?
Siempre intentamos mezclar distintas
influencias y buscar cosas nuevas al componer un tema, pero claro, al final
todo depende de lo que salga... Nosotros ponemos la intención.
*En ocasiones, aunque es posible que
me equivoque, algunos riffs de los temas me suenan un tanto vacíos, sobre todo
por no incorporar otros instrumentos a la grabación… ¿Sin premeditar o hecho a
conciencia?
Somos una banda formada
exclusivamente por batería, una guitarra y voz, tanto en directo como en
estudio, y pretendemos sonar como tal. No podemos aspirar a sonar como si
tuviésemos bajista o teclista, sonamos así premeditadamente. Seguro que
añadiendo más instrumentos podría sonar muy guay también, pero nos gusta el
formato de dúo porque es verdaderamente muy práctico, y en cierto modo forma
parte de la esencia del grupo. En cierto modo, decidimos ser una banda de black
metal en un principio porque es un estilo en donde es habitual tener un sonido
crudo.
*Uno de los motivos recurrentes en
los temas parece ser el uso de intros/outros con guitarras desenchufadas, que
le confieren cierto estilismo clásico o incluso folk, y que ya habíais usado en
la demo de 2017(“O Espertar”), del que rescatáis varios temas. ¿Hasta dónde
estáis dispuestos a incorporar otros elementos no metálicos? ¿Es algo a
explotar en nuevas producciones o algo propuesto para este disco?
Incorporamos interludios de guitarra
clásica y acústica ya desde nuestro primer EP, “Dioivo”. En “O Espertar” no las
pudimos meter, al ser una grabación en directo, pero sí en “Dioivo II”. Ambos
escuchamos estilos de música fuera del metal y eso forma parte de nuestras
influencias. La intención es que sea un elemento que continúe y evolucione en
nuestras próximas grabaciones, quizás incorporando nuevos instrumentos clásicos
y folclóricos.
*¿Qué cosas creéis que han
evolucionado en el grupo a lo largo de estos años?
En nuestro último disco incorporamos
por primera vez la guitarra eléctrica de 12 cuerdas. También intentamos
introducir más variaciones, nuevos ritmos... En general, el EP sonaba más
parecido a un black metal melódico tradicional en el sentido escandinavo de los
años 90, y desde entonces incorporamos nuevos elementos en nuestra música, que
esperamos profundizar en el siguiente disco.
*¿De dónde sacáis la inspiración para
los temas? ¿Es algo que se hace entre los dos o es más personal de cada uno de
los componentes que después comparte con el otro?
La inspiración la sacamos
principalmente tocando en casa por nuestra cuenta, y luego en el ensayo ponemos
en común las diferentes ideas que tenemos.
*¿Qué opináis sobre la escena black
en Galicia, España y el resto del mundo? ¿Cómo creéis que ha evolucionado en
los últimos años?
Es una pregunta que da para tesis
doctoral. En Galicia, nació a finales de los años 90/principios de los 2000, y
desde entonces ha producido un montón de grupazos de distintos subgéneros que
admiramos mucho: Xerión, Dantalion, Balmog, Sartegos, Marthyrium, Lóstregos,
Mileth... Por suerte la mayoría siguen activos y lanzando discazos, así que no
nos podemos quejar. Otra escena del estado español con mucha historia y que
admiramos mucho es la vasca, con grupazos como Nakkiga, Numen, Aiumeen Basoa,
Ur o Sentimen Beltza. A nivel mundial ya el asunto es inabarcable, siguen surgiendo
nuevas bandas muy originales cada año, y todo apunta a que eso va a seguir
siendo así.
*¿Tecnología sí o no? ¿La usáis a
menudo para vuestras creaciones? ¿Opináis que os ha ayudado para daros a
conocer? ¿Creéis que esta tecnología afecta a las ventas de discos físicos? ¿Os
afecta a vosotros?
Te refieres a internet? Por supuesto.
Es fundamental, y extremadamente positivo para bandas pequeñas como la nuestra.
Toda nuestra música se puede escuchar e incluso descargar gratuitamente en
internet, y eso nos permite darnos a conocer lo máximo posible, y que la gente
a la que le mole el rollo nos compre un disco o una camiseta. A nivel industria
masiva, sí, los discos físicos no volverán a ser un producto de masas y
avanzarán cara a convertirse en un objeto de coleccionismo, y no creemos que
eso sea malo en absoluto.
Por otro lado, también nos sirve para
editar y mandarnos las partituras de las canciones, de cara a ensayarlas y
luego grabarlas para el disco.
*¿Habéis tenido problemas para
encontrar una discográfica que apueste por vosotros? ¿Creéis que en general los
grupos, a día de hoy, dependen de ellas para poder distribuir y vender su
material?
Tuvimos la suerte de que Darkwoods,
un sello subterráneo que ha sacado a grupos de la talla de Dantalion, Foscor o
Nakkiga, se interesó por sacar nuestro álbum. Siempre apostó por nosotros y les
estamos inmensamente agradecidos por ello. En todo caso, nuestro EP lo
autoeditamos caseramente y lo vendimos en nuestros conciertos exclusivamente, y
tampoco fue mal. Así que, dependemos las bandas de las discográficas? Depende
de lo que quieras conseguir, si quieres vivir de la música que haces, si, pero
eso en el ámbito del metal extremo es prácticamente inviable.
*Comentadnos algo sobre vuestro
futuro: conciertos en futuro, ideas para nuevo material, etc…
Nuestra idea ahora es grabar un nuevo
disco, pero por ahora ni siquiera nosotros sabemos ningún detalle más.

Hello! We are Dioivo, a melodic black
metal duo from Vigo, Galicia.
* Some work in a few years, since
2016, and now, finally, a long album. What has prompted you to take that leap?
We always had in mind the idea of recording
long albums. In fact, our first EP, which we launched a few months after
forming the group, lasts just over half an hour. When we wanted to record his
continuation, we already had some accumulated savings, so we could make an
album itself.
* Tell us about the sensations of
recording this album and explain a little about the development of the work
from the starting point until its publication.
It was very rewarding, since we had
been working on the eight tracks that make up the album for quite some time.
Once we had them all ready, we went to the Unreal Studios, in Marín, to record
with Zoilo (Unreal Overflows, The Anthagonist…), and after a few months the
album was ready. We were very happy with the way his work and the final result.
There is not much else to tell because, the truth, everything was practically
on wheels.
* The themes include a wide variety
of different styles such as death, black or thrash. Do you look for that
amalgam as a starting point to create or is it something that, depending on the
subject, is reached by the development of the song?
We always try to mix different
influences and look for new things when composing a theme, but of course, finally
everything depends on what comes out… We put the intention.
* Sometimes, although I may be
mistaken, some riffs of the songs sound a bit empty, especially for not
incorporating other instruments into the recording… Without premeditating or
done conscientiously?
We are a band formed exclusively by
drums, a guitar and voice, both live and in studio, and we intend to sound as
such. We cannot aspire to sound as if we had a bassist or keyboard player, so
we sounded premeditated. Surely adding more instruments might sound very cool
too, but we like the duo format because it is really very practical, and in a
way it is part of the essence of the group. In a way, we decided to be a black
metal band at first because it is a style where it is usual to have a raw
sound.
* One of the recurring motives in the
themes seems to be the use of intros / outros with unplugged guitars, which
confer some classic or even folk styling, and that you had already used in the
2017 demo (“O Espertar”), of which you rescue several songs. How far are you
willing to incorporate other non-metallic elements? Is it something to exploit
in new productions or something proposed for this album?
We incorporate interludes of
classical and acoustic guitar since our first EP, "Dioivo". In
"O Espertar" we could not put them, being a live recording, but in
"Dioivo II". We both listen to music styles outside of metal and that
is part of our influences. The intention is that it be an element that
continues and evolves in our next recordings, perhaps incorporating new
classical and folk instruments.
* What things do you think have
evolved in the group over the years?
In our last album we incorporated for
the first time the 12-string electric guitar. We also tried to introduce more
variations, new rhythms… In general, the EP sounded more like a traditional
melodic black metal in the Scandinavian sense of the 90s, and since then we
incorporate new elements into our music, which we hope to deepen in the
following disk.
* Where do you get inspiration for
the themes? Is it something that is done between the two or is it more personal
of each of the components that it then shares with the other?
We draw inspiration mainly by playing
at home on our own, and then in the rehearsals we share the different ideas we
have.
* What do you think about the black
scene in Galicia, Spain and the rest of the world? How do you think it has
evolved in recent years?
It is a question he gives for a doctoral
thesis. In Galicia, it was born in the late 90s / early 2000s, and since then he
has produced a lot of grupazos from different subgenres that we admire a lot:
Xerión, Dantalion, Balmog, Sartegos, Marthyrium, Lóstregos, Mileth… Luckily
most are still active and releasing disks, so we can't complain. Another scene
of the Spanish state with a lot of history and that we admire a lot is the
Basque, with big bands like Nakkiga, Numen, Aiumeen Basoa, Ur or Sentimen
Beltza. Globally, the issue is undeniable, but new, very original bands
continue to emerge every year, and everything indicates that this will continue
to be the way.
* Technology yes or no? Do you use it
often for your creations? Do you think it has helped you to make yourself
known? Do you think this technology affects the sales of physical disks? Does
it affect you?
You mean the internet? Of course. It
is essential, and extremely positive for small bands like us. All our music can
be heard and even downloaded for free on the internet, and that allows us to
make ourselves known as much as possible, and that the people who grind the
roll buy us a disc or a shirt. At the mass industry level, yes, physical disks
will not be a mass product again and will go forward in order to become an
object of collecting, and we do not believe that this is bad at all.
On the other hand, it also serves us to
edit and send us the scores of the songs, in order to rehearse them and then
record them for the album.
* Have you had trouble finding a
record company that bet on you? Do you think that in general the groups, today,
depend on them to be able to distribute and sell their material?
We were lucky that Darkwoods, an
underground label that has taken out groups such as Dantalion, Foscor or
Nakkiga, was interested in releasing our album. They always opted for us and we
are immensely grateful for that. In any case, our EP it’s a self-publication, homemade,
and we sold it in our concerts exclusively, and it was not bad either. So, do
we depend on the bands of the record companies? It depends on what you want to
achieve, if you want to live on the music you do, yes, but that in the field of
extreme metal is practically unfeasible.
* Tell us something about your
future: future concerts, ideas for new material, etc ...
Our idea now is to record a new
album, but for now we don't even know any more details. We will continue to
inform.
